Woodland Park NJ water supply history dates to its early 20th-century origins in Passaic County, formerly known as West Paterson. Settled as part of the Acquackanonk Tract with Dutch influences from the 17th century, early residents relied on natural streams, springs, and private well water systems in Woodland Park for domestic and agricultural needs. The area’s glacial aquifers provided groundwater, supporting sparse populations before urbanization, as regional patterns indicate in Passaic County historical contexts.

Incorporated as the Borough of West Paterson on May 1, 1914, from portions of Little Falls Township, municipal water development in Woodland Park began amid growth. By the mid-20th century, the borough established its own water utility, initially sourcing locally but transitioning to purchased supplies. The Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC), formed in 1927 to consolidate regional systems, became the supplier, blending water from the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission’s Wanaque Treatment Plant (completed 1930) and PVWC’s Passaic River intake at Little Falls (filtered since 1902). PVWC also operates finished water reservoirs in Woodland Park for storage, enhancing reliability.

Today, Woodland Park’s municipal water, managed by the Department of Public Works, is purchased from PVWC and distributed via two borough-owned tanks (1 million gallons each), serving 13,484 residents (2020 census) under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations. Private wells persist in some areas, requiring testing for contaminants like PFAS.
