Allendale, New Jersey, established in 1894, has a rich history of water management evolving from private wells to a sophisticated municipal system. Initially, residents relied on individual wells tapping into the Brunswick aquifer and glacial sand and gravel, as noted by Jersey WaterCheck. By the early 20th century, the borough developed a municipal water system to meet growing demand, driven by population growth and agricultural activities like the Allendale Produce Gardens, known as the "celery farm." The system now includes five active wells, capable of producing up to 500,000 gallons per day, treated with chlorine to meet NJDEP standards. Two storage tanks—a 1,000,000-gallon ground tank and a 400,000-gallon elevated tank in Ramsey—support an average daily demand of 853,000 gallons, peaking at 2,000,000 gallons.

In 2013, Allendale transitioned water system management to United Water (now Veolia) to address increasing regulatory challenges and infrastructure costs, saving approximately $193,000 annually, according to Allendale’s official website. Recent efforts include Veolia’s $159 million project to replace lead service lines and address PFAS contamination, with temporary treatments installed by 2023 and permanent solutions expected by 2027, as reported by Veolia Water. This partnership ensures compliance with stringent state standards, enhancing water quality for Allendale’s 6,848 residents.
