Metuchen NJ Water Infrastructure Development and Modernization
Metuchen, a borough in Middlesex County, New Jersey, has a water supply history that reflects its evolution from a small settlement to a thriving suburban community. Known as "The Brainy Borough," Metuchen’s water infrastructure has undergone significant modernization in recent decades to meet the needs of its approximately 14,000 residents.
Today, Metuchen’s municipal water service is provided by Middlesex Water Company, which has served the borough since the early 20th century. The company draws water primarily from surface water sources in the Raritan River Basin and groundwater wells, treating it at their largest facility in Edison before distribution to Metuchen residents. In 2020, Middlesex Water Company completed a major infrastructure project—a 42-inch diameter water transmission main running through Edison and Metuchen—enhancing system reliability and resilience for the region’s water supply, as reported by MyCentralJersey.com.
Metuchen has benefited from significant water infrastructure investments in recent years. In 2021, Middlesex Water Company announced a $10.2 million investment to modernize drinking water infrastructure in the borough, replacing approximately 24,800 linear feet of water main, service lines, valves, and fire hydrants as part of their Water Infrastructure Improvements initiative. This project, overseen by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Water Supply, demonstrates the ongoing commitment to maintaining high water quality standards while ensuring reliable service for Metuchen residents. The borough continues to work with state and regional authorities to address emerging water quality challenges and implement sustainable water management practices for future generations.
