Woodcliff's Water Management History and Infrastructure
Before the turn of the 20th century, the area known as the Borough of Woodcliff was a quiet, agrarian community. Like most towns of that era, its residents and farms were sustained by private well water systems and the natural flow of the Pascack Brook. This decentralized approach was typical for the Pascack Valley region before the need for a large-scale, reliable water source emerged to support a growing population.
The defining moment in the Woodcliff Lake NJ water supply history occurred around 1903 with the construction of the Woodcliff Lake Reservoir. Created by damming the Pascack Brook, this massive project transformed the local landscape and the community’s identity. The reservoir’s impact was so profound that in 1910, the borough officially changed its name from Woodcliff to Woodcliff Lake, forever linking the town to its most prominent feature.
This project marked the beginning of modern municipal water development in Woodcliff Lake, NJ, shifting reliance from individual wells to a professionally managed surface water supply. Today, the reservoir is a key component of the regional water system operated by Veolia North America (formerly Suez Water), providing clean, treated water to communities throughout Bergen County and underscoring a century of evolution in public water infrastructure.
