The Creation of the Edison Water Utility
The recent history of water management in Edison Township is a story of community choice and a shift toward public control. For many years, the local water system was operated by a private entity, New Jersey American Water. However, the course of the township’s water service changed significantly following a public referendum in September 2019. The voters of Edison chose to have the municipality assume control, leading to the creation of the Edison Water Utility.
This transition marked a new era for the local water supply, placing the financial and operational responsibilities of the distribution system directly under township management. While the Edison Water Utility now oversees the vast network of pipes that deliver water to homes and businesses, the water itself is sourced from a major regional supplier, the Middlesex Water Company. This two-tiered system combines local control over infrastructure with the resources of a large-scale water purveyor.
Today, the Edison Water Utility is focused on maintaining and upgrading the critical infrastructure that serves a population of over 100,000 residents. The utility works to ensure that the water, which is treated by Middlesex Water Company using modern filtration methods, meets or exceeds all state and federal safety standards. The entire operation is regulated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, providing oversight and ensuring a reliable supply of quality drinking water for the entire community.
