The History of Municipal and Well Water in Belleville Township, New Jersey
Belleville Township’s water infrastructure history reflects the evolution of an Essex County community that has relied on regional water supply systems since the late 19th century. Established in 1839, the Township of Belleville has developed a centralized municipal water system that serves approximately 35,129 residents through its Department of Public Works.
The township’s water supply development paralleled Newark’s ambitious water infrastructure projects. Belleville receives its water through purchase of treated surface water from the Newark Water Department, which draws from the historic Pequannock Watershed in West Milford, New Jersey. This 35,000-acre watershed system, purchased by Newark in 1900, represents one of the largest municipal water supply investments in New Jersey history.
Modern water management in Belleville operates under comprehensive regulatory oversight, with the Township of Belleville Water and Sewer ordinances governing local infrastructure while state and federal agencies ensure water quality standards. The township has implemented advanced water quality monitoring and lead service line replacement programs to address aging infrastructure challenges.
Today, Belleville’s water system demonstrates the interconnected nature of regional water supply, with the township’s 4.2 million gallon daily capacity serving as part of the broader Newark water network that supplies over half a million people across multiple municipalities in northern New Jersey.
