Chatham’s water supply history reflects the complex municipal development of Morris County throughout the 19th and 20th centuries. Originally established as "John Day’s Bridge" in 1710, the community that became Chatham Borough was renamed in 1773 to honor William Pitt, 1st Earl of Chatham. The area’s water infrastructure evolved from individual well water systems to sophisticated municipal networks, paralleling broader regional water development initiatives.

Early residents relied on private well water sources, drawing from Morris County’s abundant groundwater resources. The transition to municipal water supply became critical during the late 1800s when Madison seceded from Chatham Township in 1889 specifically to develop a local water supply system for its population of 3,250. This historic precedent demonstrated the growing importance of centralized water infrastructure in the region.

Today, Chatham Borough provides comprehensive water service to residents through its municipal water department, with quarterly billing and modern utility management systems. The borough’s water infrastructure serves both Chatham Borough and supports regional water supply coordination through partnerships with neighboring municipalities and the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority.

The development of Chatham’s municipal water systems reflects broader New Jersey water supply evolution, with oversight from the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection ensuring water quality standards.
