A History of Water in Woodbridge Township, NJ
As one of New Jersey’s oldest original townships, chartered in 1669, Woodbridge has a long and layered water history. For centuries, its early settlements and farms depended on private well water systems and direct access to local sources like the Rahway River. This decentralized approach was sufficient for a sprawling, agrarian society but could not support the industrial and suburban boom of the 20th century.
The township established its own public Water Utility to manage this vital resource. This involved a significant investment in infrastructure, including the development of a local wellfield to tap into the region’s groundwater aquifers, marking a major step towards a centralized and professionally managed system.
Today, the Woodbridge Township NJ water supply history is defined by a robust hybrid model. The Woodbridge Water Utility operates its own wells but also purchases treated surface water from Middlesex Water Company to meet demand and ensure system redundancy. This dual-source approach provides a resilient and high-quality water supply, managed under the strict oversight of the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, safeguarding the health of New Jersey’s fifth-largest municipality.
