History of Municipal and Well Water in Westfield Township, New Jersey
Westfield NJ water supply history dates to its early 18th-century settlement in Union County, where Presbyterian families from Connecticut and Long Island arrived around 1720, relying on natural springs, streams, and private well water systems in Westfield for domestic and agricultural needs. The Lenni-Lenape Native Americans previously inhabited the area, using local waterways. As a farming community, groundwater from the Brunswick Formation aquifer supported early residents, with wells tapping into productive zones at 200-600 feet deep, yielding averages of 200 gallons per minute, per USGS data from Geology and Ground-Water Resources of Union County.
Incorporated as a township on November 19, 1794, from portions of Elizabeth Township, Westfield saw municipal water development in the late 19th century amid growth. Discussions on public supply began in 1892, leading to establishment in 1894 with initial infrastructure, including sewers in 1895. By the early 20th century, as it became a town in 1903, the Elizabethtown Water Company (now New Jersey American Water) developed wells like those in Westfield Office and Elm Street, drilled in the 1950s, sourcing from Pleistocene deposits and Brunswick Formation for public use, as detailed in historical records at History of Town of Westfield.
Today, Westfield’s municipal water is provided by New Jersey American Water, drawing from regional groundwater wells and surface sources under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations, serving 31,032 residents (2020 census). Pipes dating to the 1930s have undergone repairs since 2008. Private wells remain in some areas, requiring testing for contaminants.
