The History of Municipal and Well Water in Hackensack, New Jersey
Hackensack’s water system traces its roots to 1869 when the Hackensack Water Company was founded to address the growing needs of this Bergen County community. Before this centralized system, residents relied on private wells and cisterns, which became inadequate as Hackensack developed into a commercial hub after the Civil War. The company’s first infrastructure – a brick reservoir north of town and pipes fed by Hackensack River water – began service in 1874, marking Hackensack’s transition from well water to municipal supply.
By 1881, under new leadership, the company expanded significantly, constructing iconic facilities like the Weehawken Water Tower (1883) and later the New Milford filtration plant (1882-1911) which pioneered water treatment technologies. These developments positioned Hackensack as a regional water leader, with the company serving 500,000 people across Bergen County by 1950.
Today, Hackensack’s water system – now operated by Suez Water New Jersey – draws from four reservoirs while maintaining rigorous quality standards. The city continues to invest in infrastructure, recently partnering with Bergen County municipalities to improve sewer systems and reduce flooding. From its well-dependent beginnings to its current regional system, Hackensack’s water history reflects its growth from rural village to urban center.
