West Milford Township’s Water Management History
West Milford NJ water supply history dates to its 18th-century settlement by Dutch farmers in Passaic County, originally part of Bergen County. Early residents relied on natural springs, streams like the Pequannock River, and private well water systems in West Milford for domestic and agricultural needs. The area’s highlands geology supported groundwater aquifers, but portions later became reservoir property for Newark’s Pequannock Watershed, established in the late 19th century with reservoirs like Clinton (1892) and Charlotteburg supplying water to Essex County, as detailed on Wikipedia’s West Milford page.
Incorporated on March 10, 1834, from Pompton Township, West Milford saw municipal water development in the 20th century amid suburban growth. The West Milford Municipal Utilities Authority (WMMUA), formed to manage water and sewer, operated community systems from groundwater wells, serving limited areas. By the mid-1900s, extensions addressed needs in hamlets like Awosting and Newfoundland, but many rural properties remained on private wells.
Today, after a 2018 sale to SUEZ Water New Jersey due to WMMUA’s financial struggles, municipal water sources from treated groundwater and surface supplies serve about 1,700 connections among 24,862 residents (2020 census), regulated by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
