History of Municipal and Well Water in West Caldwell Township, New Jersey
West Caldwell NJ water supply history dates to its early 18th-century settlement in Essex County, part of the Horseneck Tract purchased in 1702 from Lenape Native Americans. Early European farmers relied on natural springs, streams, and private well water systems in West Caldwell for domestic and agricultural needs, as the area’s glacial aquifers provided groundwater. Incorporated as a borough on February 24, 1904, from portions of Caldwell Township, West Caldwell experienced suburban growth in the 20th century, necessitating organized water infrastructure.
Municipal water development in West Caldwell began with local wells but shifted to purchased supplies. The West Caldwell Water Department, established to manage distribution, now buys treated water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission (PVWC), formed in 1927 to consolidate regional systems. PVWC sources include the Passaic River (treated at Little Falls since 1902) and reservoirs like Wanaque, serving parts of Essex County including West Caldwell. This transition improved reliability amid population increases.
Today, West Caldwell’s municipal water system features over 55 miles of pipeline and 509 hydrants, serving 10,759 residents (2020 census) under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations.
