These individual wells tapped into local aquifers, providing a sufficient water source for homes and the borough’s burgeoning iron industry in the 19th and early 20th centuries.
As the population grew, the need for a centralized and professionally managed water system became essential for public health and fire safety. This led to the municipal water development in Wharton, NJ, with the borough establishing its own Water Department. This transition marked a significant investment in public infrastructure, creating a unified system to serve the entire community with a dependable water supply.
Today, the Wharton NJ water supply history is defined by its self-sufficiency. The borough’s Water Department operates as a public utility, sourcing its water from local glacial sand and gravel aquifers.
