Woodbridge Township, NJ Water Supply History
As one of New Jersey’s oldest townships, chartered in 1669, Woodbridge has a rich water history spanning over three centuries. Early settlers and colonial communities relied entirely on private well water systems and direct access to natural sources like the Rahway River. This decentralized approach sustained the sprawling, agricultural community for generations but proved inadequate as industrialization and suburban development transformed the region in the 20th century.
Recognizing the need for reliable, safe water service, the township established its own Water Utility to manage this essential resource. This involved significant investment in developing local wellfields, particularly the Park Avenue and Spring Lake facilities in South Plainfield and the Tingley Lane Wellfields in North Edison, which tap into the Brunswick Aquifer to provide high-quality groundwater.
Today’s Woodbridge Township NJ water supply history reflects a sophisticated hybrid approach. The township operates its own wells while also purchasing treated surface water from Middlesex Water Company, which sources from the Delaware and Raritan Canal system. This dual-source strategy provides system redundancy and ensures consistent service to New Jersey’s fifth-largest municipality, demonstrating how historical water management has evolved to meet modern demands while maintaining local control over this vital resource.
