Hanover Township New Jersey Water Supply History
The Hanover Township New Jersey water infrastructure history represents a pioneering model of regional cooperation in Morris County. In 1977, the governing bodies of Morristown, Morris Township, Morris Plains, and Hanover Township passed parallel ordinances creating the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (SMCMUA), establishing one of New Jersey’s most successful intermunicipal water partnerships.
This collaborative approach to municipal water development in Hanover Township NJ has created Morris County’s largest water purveyor, serving over 62,000 residents daily. The SMCMUA operates through multiple water sources including the Clyde Potts Reservoir, glacial sand and gravel aquifers, and the Brunswick aquifer system. Historic wells like the Wing Well, operational since 1949 and capable of producing 4 million gallons daily, demonstrate the township’s long-term commitment to reliable water infrastructure.
Today’s well water systems in Hanover Township benefit from strategic wellhead protection initiatives, including SMCMUA’s 2001 acquisition of 18.92 acres of protection land around the Wing and Todd well fields. The authority maintains over 15,000 residential and 2,500 commercial accounts while meeting all New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection standards for water quality and safety.
The township’s water management also includes the Hanover Sewerage Authority, established in 1956, which provides wastewater treatment for 99% of the township. This comprehensive approach to water infrastructure, supported by resources like Jersey WaterCheck, ensures sustainable water services for current and future generations in this thriving Morris County community.
