Given its sprawling, rural landscape within the New Jersey Highlands, Vernon Township’s history is deeply connected to groundwater. For centuries, residents have depended almost exclusively on private well water systems in Vernon. The region’s geology provides access to abundant, high-quality groundwater, making individual wells the most practical and prevalent water source for the majority of homes, farms, and businesses scattered across the valley.

As the township’s population grew, particularly within concentrated resort and residential communities, the need for centralized services became apparent. This spurred the municipal water development in Vernon Township, NJ, leading to the establishment of the Vernon Township Municipal Utilities Authority (MUA). Rather than a town-wide system, the MUA and other small community systems were developed to serve specific, more densely populated areas, ensuring reliable water pressure and consistent quality for those residents.

Today, the Vernon Township water supply history is characterized by this hybrid model. While the MUA provides service to thousands of customers in designated zones, a significant portion of the township’s population continues to rely on private wells. This dual approach reflects the unique challenge of providing water across a geographically diverse community, balancing modern utility service with a long-standing tradition of groundwater self-sufficiency.
