History of Municipal and Well Water in West Orange Township, New Jersey
West Orange Township NJ water supply history dates to its early 18th-century settlement in Essex County, part of the Newark Tract with Lenape Native Americans using natural springs like Eagle Rock Spring for its reputed healing properties. European settlers, including Scottish and Irish families, relied on these springs, streams, and private well water systems in West Orange Township for domestic and agricultural needs, as the area’s geology supported groundwater aquifers. Incorporated as Fairmount Township in 1862 and renamed West Orange in 1863, the community grew with suburban development, initially depending on individual wells and pumps until formalized systems emerged.
Municipal water development in West Orange Township accelerated in the late 19th century amid population increases. In 1892, the township contracted with the West Orange Water Company for public supply, shifting from private sources. By the 20th century, regional utilities integrated, though groundwater contamination led to the Orange Valley Regional Superfund site designation in 1989, affecting wells in West Orange and Orange with TCE and PCE, prompting treatment systems. New Jersey American Water, Passaic Valley Water Commission, and North Jersey District Water Supply Commission later assumed roles.
Today, West Orange’s municipal water sources vary: northern areas from NJDWSC’s Wanaque Reservoir and PVWC’s Passaic River treatment, southern from New Jersey American Water’s groundwater and surface supplies, serving 48,843 residents (2020 census) under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations. Private wells persist in some properties, requiring testing for contaminants.
