Legionella bacteria, particularly Legionella pneumophila, are pathogens found naturally in freshwater systems like rivers, lakes, and streams. While these bacteria which have little risk in the natural ecosystem, they can become a significant public health threat when they proliferate in man-made water systems. Legionella can survive in warm water environments and biofilms within potable water systems, such as hot water tanks, cooling towers, and large building plumbing systems.
