Stanhope New Jersey Water Supply History
Stanhope’s water story begins with 18th-century iron forges tapping the Musconetcong River and shallow hand-dug wells serving workers’ housing. By 1820, the Sussex Iron Company had drilled deeper artesian wells to feed steam-powered blast furnaces, establishing the first engineered well water systems in Stanhope. The 1870s Morris Canal expansion brought canal water into homes, but contamination from coal ash and iron slag forced a return to groundwater.
Municipal water development in Stanhope, NJ accelerated after borough incorporation in 1904. The 1925 Singer Manufacturing Company sale transferred private wells to public ownership, creating the Stanhope Water Department. Original 1920s infrastructure—two 200-foot wells and a 50,000-gallon standpipe—still serves portions of the borough. Today, three municipal wells draw from the fractured-bedrock aquifer, meeting 1.2 million gallons daily demand while maintaining the historic balance between natural springs and engineered supply that defines Stanhope’s water heritage.
