Maplewood Township, located in Essex County, New Jersey, has a water supply history that reflects its development from a rural farming community in the 18th century to a vibrant suburban township. The community’s water infrastructure evolved significantly during the late 19th and early 20th centuries as Maplewood transformed into a commuter suburb of Newark and New York City.

Today, Maplewood Township’s municipal water service is provided by New Jersey American Water, a subsidiary of American Water, the largest publicly traded water and wastewater utility company in the United States. The system draws primarily from surface water sources in the Passaic and Raritan River Basins, with water treated at regional facilities before distribution to Maplewood’s approximately 25,000 residents. This reliable water supply system has replaced the individual wells and small local water companies that once served the township in its earlier days.

Maplewood has demonstrated a commitment to sustainable water management practices. The township works with the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Ground Water and Drinking Water Division and the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Water Quality on water conservation initiatives and quality monitoring. Additionally, the Maplewood Environmental Advisory Committee has championed stormwater management regulations and green infrastructure projects to reduce runoff and improve water quality in local waterways.
