The Evolution of Bloomingdale NJ's Water Supply
Bloomingdale Borough’s water supply history reflects the broader transformation of Passaic County’s infrastructure from rural wells to modern municipal systems. Originally part of Pompton Township established in 1798, early Bloomingdale residents relied exclusively on private wells and natural springs for their water needs, a practice that continued well into the 20th century.
The transition to municipal water service in Bloomingdale began as the borough experienced post-World War II growth and development. Like neighboring Passaic County communities, Bloomingdale’s groundwater sources became increasingly strained, necessitating a more reliable water supply system. The borough eventually established connections with the Passaic Valley Water Commission, which treats water from the Wanaque and Monksville Reservoirs through the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission facilities.
Today, the Bloomingdale Water Department purchases bulk water from PVWC, serving approximately 5,800 residents through its distribution network. This partnership ensures Bloomingdale residents receive water that meets all federal and state quality standards. The borough maintains 1,298 service lines of unknown composition and continues infrastructure improvements in Passaic County, working to identify and replace aging pipes while addressing potential lead service line concerns.
The evolution from private wells to Bloomingdale’s modern water distribution system demonstrates how Passaic County municipalities adapted to suburban growth challenges, transforming from rural communities dependent on groundwater to interconnected systems ensuring safe, reliable water service for all residents.
