History of Municipal and Well Water in Westwood, New Jersey
Westwood NJ water supply history dates to its early 18th-century settlement in Bergen County, where Dutch and English families relied on natural springs, streams like the Pascack Brook, and private well water systems in Westwood for domestic and agricultural needs. The area, part of Washington Township until incorporation on May 8, 1894, amid "Boroughitis," featured groundwater from local aquifers supporting sparse populations, as documented in borough records.
Municipal water development in Westwood accelerated in the early 20th century with growth. By the 1920s, the borough improved its water system, installing mains and hydrants on principal streets to enhance fire protection and supply, coinciding with street expansions for businesses and residents. The Hackensack Water Company, founded in 1869, expanded regionally, eventually supplying Westwood from surface sources like the Hackensack River and Oradell Reservoir (completed 1923), per historical accounts.
Today, Westwood’s municipal water is managed by Veolia North America, successor to Hackensack Water, sourcing from treated surface and groundwater under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations, serving 11,282 residents (2020 census).
