Middlesex County NJ Water Infrastructure and Management Evolution
Middlesex County, located in central New Jersey, has a water supply history that spans over a century, with infrastructure development closely tied to the region’s industrial and residential growth. The county’s water management has evolved significantly since the late 19th century, when organized water utilities first began serving the area’s communities.
The cornerstone of Middlesex County’s water infrastructure is the Middlesex Water Company, established in 1897. This historic utility provides water services to approximately 58,000 retail customers across multiple municipalities in the county, including Woodbridge Township, Metuchen, Carteret, portions of Edison Township, South Plainfield, and South Amboy. The company also serves an additional population of 267,000 through contracts with municipalities like Highland Park, Sayreville, and the Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority, demonstrating the interconnected nature of the county’s water systems.
In addition to the Middlesex Water Company, parts of the county are served by New Jersey American Water, which draws from surface water sources in the Raritan River Basin and groundwater wells. The county’s water infrastructure has benefited from significant modernization efforts in recent decades, including the "Water for Tomorrow" program, which has invested hundreds of millions of dollars in system improvements to enhance reliability and water quality.
Wastewater management in Middlesex County is primarily handled by the Middlesex County Utilities Authority (MCUA), which operates an extensive collection and treatment system. The MCUA works in conjunction with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection’s Division of Water Quality to implement watershed protection measures, particularly for the Manalapan Brook Watershed, which received an approved Protection and Restoration Plan in 2012. These collaborative efforts between utilities, municipal governments, and state agencies demonstrate Middlesex County’s commitment to sustainable water resource management while addressing the challenges of serving its diverse urban, suburban, and industrial communities.
