History of Municipal and Well Water in Fort Lee, New Jersey
Fort Lee NJ water supply history traces back to the borough’s early days as a rural area in Bergen County, where residents primarily depended on private well water systems in Fort Lee for drinking and household needs. Before incorporation in 1904, local springs and wells served the community, but rapid urbanization in the late 19th century highlighted the limitations of these sources, prone to contamination and insufficient for growing populations.
The shift to organized municipal water development in Bergen County began with the Hackensack Water Company, established in 1869. By 1882, the company opened its New Milford Plant, drawing from the Hackensack River to provide treated water across northeastern New Jersey, including Fort Lee. In 1916, the North Jersey District Water Supply Commission (NJDWSC) was formed to address regional shortages, leading to the Wanaque Reservoir’s completion in 1930. This 29.6-billion-gallon facility bolstered municipal water in Bergen County, including Fort Lee, by supplementing river sources with upland storage. Fort Lee’s system integrated these advancements, transitioning fully to municipal supplies by the mid-20th century.
Today, Veolia North America manages Fort Lee’s water, ensuring compliance with modern standards through advanced treatment. While private wells persist in some areas, municipal systems dominate, supported by the Bergen County Utilities Authority for wastewater.
