Teaneck Township, established in 1895 from portions of Englewood Township and Ridgefield Township, has evolved significantly in its approach to water management. In its early development, like many communities in Bergen County, Teaneck residents relied on a combination of private well water systems and small local water sources. The township’s location near the Hackensack River watershed provided natural water resources that supported the growing community.

As Teaneck grew from a population of just 811 at its incorporation to over 16,500 by 1930, the need for organized water infrastructure became increasingly apparent. The township’s rapid development, particularly after the completion of the George Washington Bridge in 1931, necessitated a more comprehensive approach to municipal water management in Teaneck, NJ. Today, Teaneck is served by Veolia North America New Jersey (formerly Suez Water), which manages water distribution throughout Bergen County, representing a shift from local control to regional water management.

Modern Teaneck water supply comes primarily from the Hackensack River watershed, including the Oradell Reservoir, with additional water from the Wanaque Reservoir. The township has implemented progressive stormwater management practices, as evidenced by its dedicated stormwater webpage and updated ordinances requiring green infrastructure in new developments. This evolution from individual water sources to a sophisticated regional system reflects Teaneck’s commitment to sustainable water management and public health.
