The History of Water in Union, NJ
In its early history, the Township of Union was a largely agricultural community where residents sourced their water directly from the land. Private well water systems in Union were the standard, drawing from the region’s ample groundwater. Proximity to the Rahway River also provided a crucial water source for farming and daily life, a common practice for settlements across New Jersey before the advent of large-scale public utilities.
The significant suburban expansion following World War II dramatically increased the township’s population, placing a strain on individual wells and highlighting the need for a more reliable and centralized water source. This period marked the beginning of comprehensive municipal water development in Union, NJ. To ensure public health and support continued growth, the township transitioned to a professionally managed public water system, partnering with what is now New Jersey American Water to build and maintain the necessary infrastructure.
Today, the Union NJ water supply history is characterized by its integration into a sophisticated regional network. Water is primarily sourced from the Raritan and Millstone Rivers, treated at state-of-the-art facilities, and distributed to homes and businesses. This system ensures a safe, dependable water supply that meets strict quality standards set by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection, representing a complete evolution from localized wells to a modern, resilient utility service.
