History of Municipal and Well Water in Old Bridge Township, NJ
The Old Bridge Township New Jersey water supply history starts with its incorporation as Madison Township in 1869 from South Amboy, renamed Old Bridge in 1975. Early settlers, including Lenni Lenape, relied on the Raritan River and private well water systems in Old Bridge Township, with clay pits and farms dominating the landscape. By the late 1800s, the Runyon Watershed was established for surface water, now operated by Middlesex Water Company.
Municipal water development in Old Bridge Township, NJ, accelerated post-1950s amid population growth from 7,365 in 1950 to over 66,000 today. The Old Bridge Municipal Utilities Authority (OBMUA) formed in 1985 by consolidating the 1954 Sewerage Authority and 1969 Utilities Authority. Facilities built 1955-1965 included eight wells in the Potomac-Raritan-Magothy aquifer, treated at Browntown (5 MGD) and Old Bridge (3 MGD) plants using aeration, clarification, filtration, and chlorination. A 1986 agreement with Middlesex Water Company provides up to 9 MGD surface water, renewed in 2011. Expansions include 1995 diversion rights purchase and 2001 radio meters.
Well water systems in Old Bridge Township serve 98% via OBMUA, with 2% on private wells. 1970s contamination from Superfund sites like CPS/Madison and Evor Phillips led to well closures and groundwater restrictions.
