Jamesburg, New Jersey, established in the early 18th century with a gristmill operating as early as 1734, initially relied on private wells drawing from local groundwater aquifers in the Raritan River Basin. The borough’s residents depended on these individual water sources until the late 19th and early 20th centuries, when population growth and modernization necessitated a transition to more organized water infrastructure. According to Jamesburg Borough’s official history, the area was initially part of a larger region, with the Reverend David Brainerd establishing an Indian mission called "Bethel" in 1746 on land that is now part of Thompson Park.

Today, Jamesburg is served by New Jersey American Water’s Raritan system, which provides water to approximately 736,791 people across multiple municipalities in central New Jersey. This system draws from diverse sources including the Millstone River, Raritan River, Delaware & Raritan Canal, and various groundwater formations including the Brunswick aquifer, as indicated in the NJ Water Check database. The New Jersey Water Supply Authority, created in 1981, also plays a crucial role in managing water resources for the region, serving approximately 2 million residents in the Raritan Basin area.

Like many older communities in New Jersey, Jamesburg faces ongoing challenges related to aging water infrastructure, including the presence of lead service lines. New Jersey American Water has committed to replacing all lead and galvanized piping within the next decade while conducting regular water quality testing to ensure compliance with standards set by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. In 2018, as reported by NJ.com, the borough faced a temporary water outage due to a valve malfunction, highlighting infrastructure vulnerabilities. As climate change and population growth continue to pressure water resources, Jamesburg’s future water management will likely focus on infrastructure improvements, advanced treatment technologies, and sustainable conservation practices to ensure clean water remains available for generations to come.
