History of Municipal and Well Water in Weehawken, New Jersey

Weehawken NJ water supply history dates to its early 17th-century settlement in Hudson County, where Lenape Native Americans and later Dutch colonists relied on natural springs, streams, and private well water systems in Weehawken for domestic needs. Henry Hudson anchored in Weehawken Cove in 1609, and by 1630, European immigrants began farming the fertile land. Incorporated as a township on March 15, 1859, from portions of Hoboken and North Bergen, Weehawken’s growth along the Hudson Palisades spurred infrastructure needs, as detailed on Wikipedia’s Weehawken page and the official Township of Weehawken site.

Municipal water development in Weehawken accelerated in the late 19th century with the Hackensack Water Company, founded in the 1870s to supply northeastern New Jersey. In 1883, the company built the iconic Weehawken Water Tower on Park Avenue, a 175-foot brick structure designed by Frederick Clarke Withers, pumping water from the Hackensack River to Reservoir No. 1 atop the Palisades for Hoboken and surrounding areas. Reservoir No. 2, constructed around 1893 with a 69-million-gallon capacity, further expanded storage until its decommissioning in 1996 and conversion to Reservoir Park in 2015, per Wikipedia’s Hackensack Water Company Complex and Brownstoner’s Weehawken Water Tower article.

Today, Weehawken’s municipal water is provided by SUEZ North America, successor to Hackensack Water, sourcing from regional supplies under New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection regulations, serving 17,197 residents (2020 census). Private wells are rare in this urban township, but groundwater testing remains relevant for historical sites. For well water systems in Weehawken, services are available through Olympian Water Testing in Hudson County.
