Ho-Ho-Kus NJ Water Supply History
The Ho-Ho-Kus NJ water supply history traces back to the area’s Native American origins, where the Delaware Indian name "Mah-Ho-Ho-Kus" meaning "the red cedar" reflected the natural water resources that first attracted settlement. The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook, flowing through the community’s center, served as the primary water source for centuries before modern infrastructure development.
Early well water systems in Ho-Ho-Kus developed during the community’s transformation from Orvil Township. Originally incorporated as the Borough of Orvil in 1905, then reincorporated as Ho-Ho-Kus in 1908, the community relied on private wells and natural springs during its agricultural period. The Ho-Ho-Kus Brook provided both drinking water and power for early mills and settlements.
Municipal water development in Ho-Ho-Kus accelerated significantly during the 20th century as the population grew from 316 residents in 1900 to over 4,000 today. The community now receives wastewater treatment services through the Northwest Bergen County Utilities Authority, established in 1952, which serves eleven municipalities including Ho-Ho-Kus and treats wastewater before releasing it to the Hohokus Brook.
Today’s water infrastructure reflects the broader North Jersey District Water Supply Commission’s mission, established in 1916 to develop municipal water supplies throughout Bergen County. This evolution from natural springs and private wells to sophisticated municipal systems ensures reliable water service for Ho-Ho-Kus’s affluent community, which was named New Jersey’s best place to live in 2011.
