Harrington Park Bergen County New Jersey Water Infrastructure History
The municipal water development in Harrington Park NJ is deeply intertwined with one of America’s most significant water utility companies. For over a century, Harrington Park served as the headquarters for what began as the Hackensack Water Company in 1869, later becoming United Water Resources and eventually Suez North America. This corporate presence made Harrington Park a pivotal center for Bergen County water authority history and regional water infrastructure development.
Today, well water systems in Harrington Park coexist with municipal service provided through the Bergen County Utilities Authority (BCUA), which handles wastewater treatment for forty-seven Bergen County municipalities. The BCUA processes over 83 million gallons per day of wastewater and has been protecting the environment and health of Bergen County since 1951. For drinking water supply, many residents receive service through regional providers connected to the historic Oradell Reservoir system.
The Harrington Park Bergen County New Jersey water infrastructure history includes significant environmental protections established through the Watershed Protection and Moratorium Act. Following investigations in the early 2000s, a 2009 settlement agreement resulted in conservation easements protecting approximately 3,095 acres of watershed land, including 55 acres in Harrington Park that remain permanently protected from development.
This evolution from corporate water headquarters to regulated municipal systems demonstrates how Harrington Park’s water infrastructure has adapted to meet modern environmental standards while preserving the community’s unique role in regional water management history.
