Somerville NJ Water Supply History and Infrastructure
The Somerville, New Jersey water supply history dates back to the early 19th century, when the Somerville Aqueduct Company was chartered in 1807 to deliver pure water to the village using wooden pipes. This early system faced technical challenges, including frequent pipe breaks due to high water pressure, and was eventually abandoned. Later, in 1828, the Somerville Aqueduct and Insurance Company was incorporated to upgrade the aqueduct with cast iron and lead pipes, marking a significant step in local water infrastructure Somerville Waterworks history article.
By 1881, the Somerville Water Company was established, expanding service to neighboring Raritan and eventually merging with Elizabethtown Water Company in 1927. Today, water service in Somerville is provided by New Jersey American Water, which maintains modern water quality standards and invests in infrastructure upgrades. Recent projects include the installation of 3,200 feet of new 30-inch water transmission main and replacement of 2,200 feet of aging pipes, strengthening the system and reducing the risk of breaks NJAW water main construction update.
In 2023, New Jersey American Water also acquired Somerville’s municipal sewer system, serving 3,800 customers and committing to invest at least $9.5 million in improvements over the next decade.
