Long Hill Township Water Systems and Management Through History
Long Hill Township, formerly known as Passaic Township until 1992, has a water supply history that reflects its rural and suburban character in Morris County, New Jersey. The township, which includes the communities of Gillette, Stirling, Millington, and Meyersville, has developed its water infrastructure gradually alongside its residential growth.
Today, Long Hill Township’s water service is primarily provided by New Jersey American Water, which acquired the township’s water and wastewater systems in 2019. Prior to this acquisition, the township operated its own municipal water utility for many decades. The system draws from a combination of groundwater wells and surface water sources, with the Passaic River flowing through the township serving as an important water resource for the region.
Long Hill Township has faced water management challenges related to its location in the Passaic River Basin, including periodic flooding concerns. The township works with the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection on water quality monitoring and flood mitigation efforts. Additionally, the Long Hill Township government has implemented stormwater management regulations and infrastructure improvements to address these challenges. The township’s transfer of water system ownership to New Jersey American Water represents a significant development in its water management approach, aimed at leveraging private sector resources for infrastructure improvements while maintaining high service standards for residents.
