A Tale of Two Systems: Water and Sewer in East Hanover, New Jersey
The history of water management in East Hanover is a story of local control and regional cooperation. Like many communities in Morris County, the township’s early residents relied on private well water systems for their daily needs. As the population grew, the need for a centralized and reliable public water source became essential, leading to the formal establishment of the Township of East Hanover Water Department. This marked a significant step in the municipal water development of the area, ensuring that residents had access to a safe and professionally managed water supply.
Today, the East Hanover Water Department continues to operate as a distinct municipal utility, responsible for providing drinking water that meets strict quality standards set by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection. While the township manages its own drinking water, some surrounding areas are served by the Southeast Morris County Municipal Utilities Authority (SMCMUA), highlighting the diverse approaches to water purveyance in the region. The township’s commitment to water quality and conservation is evident in its public notices and year-round water restrictions designed to ensure a sustainable supply for the future.
On the wastewater side, East Hanover is part of a regional solution. The Hanover Sewerage Authority (HSA), created in 1956, provides wastewater collection and treatment services to Hanover Township and parts of East Hanover. This authority was established to address the failures of septic systems and to create a long-term plan for the area’s wastewater needs. This dual approach—a local water department and a regional sewerage authority—demonstrates a comprehensive strategy to managing the complete water cycle, protecting public health, and supporting the community’s infrastructure.
