The Evolution of Bloomfield NJ's Water Supply: From Wells to Municipal Service
Bloomfield Township’s water supply history reflects the broader transformation of Essex County’s infrastructure from rural wells to modern municipal systems. Originally settled in the 1660s as part of Newark’s Puritan colony, early Bloomfield residents relied exclusively on private wells and natural springs for their water needs, a practice that continued well into the 19th century.
The transition to municipal water service in Bloomfield began in the late 1800s as the township experienced rapid industrialization and population growth. Like neighboring Essex County communities, Bloomfield’s groundwater sources became increasingly strained and contaminated, necessitating a more reliable water supply system. The township eventually established connections with Newark’s water system, which had developed sophisticated infrastructure drawing from the Pequannock and Wanaque watersheds.
Today, the Bloomfield water department primarily purchases pre-treated water from Newark, serving over 47,000 residents through an extensive distribution network. This partnership with Newark’s water utility, which dates back to 1886, ensures Bloomfield residents receive water that meets all federal and state quality standards. The township has invested millions in recent years upgrading water infrastructure in Essex County, including replacing aging pipes and addressing lead service line concerns.
The evolution from private wells to Bloomfield’s modern water distribution system demonstrates how Essex County municipalities adapted to urbanization challenges, transforming from rural communities dependent on groundwater to interconnected systems ensuring safe, reliable water service for all residents.
