The North Haledon New Jersey water supply history reflects a transition from private wells to interconnected municipal systems, shaped by the borough’s growth since its incorporation in 1901. Initially, residents relied on well water systems in North Haledon, drawing from local groundwater sources amid the area’s rural character.

Municipal water development in North Haledon, NJ, began in the early 20th century. In 1907, North Haledon granted Haledon (then Manchester Township) rights to lay water mains along key roads, enabling the extension of potable water infrastructure. By 1917, further approvals allowed Haledon to expand mains, build a reservoir, and establish a filter plant, addressing growing demands as the population increased. This laid the foundation for Haledon’s supply to portions of North Haledon, now managed through the Manchester Utilities Authority, which sources water from the Passaic Valley Water Commission.

In 2001, North Haledon entered an agreement with Hawthorne for water supply to new residential developments, connecting about 382 homes via expanded mains from Hawthorne’s system. Today, the borough’s water comes from multiple providers, including Hawthorne’s municipal wells for some areas.

Well water systems in North Haledon persist for many homes, but challenges emerged in 2021 when PFAS contamination was detected in over 160 private wells, prompting state-funded filters and ongoing investigations by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
