Hardyston Township Sussex County New Jersey Water Infrastructure History
The Hardyston Township Sussex County New Jersey water infrastructure history spans over two centuries, evolving from early industrial water power utilization to sophisticated municipal utility systems. Originally chartered in 1762 and named after Royal Governor Josiah Hardy, the township’s water story began with the Pequannock River providing essential water power for early industries, including the historic snuff factory in what was once called "Snufftown" before becoming Stockholm.
The transformation of municipal water development in Hardyston Township NJ took a significant leap forward in 1985 with the establishment of the Hardyston Township Municipal Utilities Authority (HTMUA). Created to secure sewer allocation from the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority and provide comprehensive water services, the HTMUA operates under New Jersey’s Municipal and County Utilities Authorities Law, managing both potable water supply and public sewage collection for township residents.
Today’s well water systems in Hardyston Township operate within a complex framework that includes both municipal services and private wells, particularly significant given that a large eastern portion of the township is owned by the City of Newark for their Pequannock River Watershed. This 35,000-acre watershed provides water to Newark and encompasses portions of multiple townships, highlighting Hardyston’s continued importance in regional water supply infrastructure.
The HTMUA maintains two distinct water systems – the Indian Field Water System and the Crystal Springs Water System – both monitored through comprehensive annual drinking water quality reports. The authority works in partnership with the Sussex County Municipal Utilities Authority (SCMUA) for wastewater treatment and disposal, while ensuring compliance with federal and state regulations governing drinking water quality, pollution control, and environmental protection standards established by the New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection.
