Brooklyn and Manhattan have the highest estimated proportions of lead service lines, at 46% and 44% respectively. In the Bronx, nearly 25% of water lines are confirmed to contain lead. Staten Island’s Port Richmond neighborhood has the city’s highest concentration of lead service lines, with approximately 61%.
The report, utilizing data from the city’s Department of Environmental Protection (DEP), highlights properties with "possible lead" water lines where records are missing or conflicting.
Although New York City prohibited lead pipes in 1961, and a national ban followed in 1986, existing lead service lines persist. "New York City should prioritize replacing lead service lines to safeguard public health," emphasized one spokesperson.
The New York City Coalition to End Lead Poisoning hopes this report will prompt the city council to legislate the replacement of all lead pipes within the next decade. Newark, New Jersey, set a precedent by replacing 23,000 lead service lines in under three years through a fully funded city program initiated in 2019.
