A major water main break outside Cooperman Barnabas Medical Center in Livingston, New Jersey, has disrupted hospital operations, leading to the cancellation of surgeries and the diversion of ambulances to other facilities. The break, which occurred early Thursday morning near the hospital’s emergency department, prompted officials to take swift action to ensure patient safety while repairs are underway.

Despite the disruption, the hospital’s emergency department remains open to walk-in patients and continues to provide care for burn victims, as it serves as a major burn treatment center in the region. Some outpatient services have been suspended, and hospital staff are relying on bottled water for drinking and essential needs while running water remains available for critical operations.

The incident has raised concerns as North Jersey faces a string of water main breaks in recent days due to prolonged sub-freezing temperatures. Local officials anticipate temperatures to rise above freezing over the weekend, which may help alleviate the strain on aging infrastructure.

Hospital spokesperson Carrie Cristello stated that Cooperman Barnabas is working closely with the City of Livingston, Essex County, and the Department of Health to manage the situation and maintain the safety of patients and staff. Repairs are ongoing, but it remains unclear when full services will resume.

The water main break highlights the challenges that extreme weather conditions pose to infrastructure and the critical need for preparedness in healthcare facilities to ensure continuity of care during unexpected emergencies.
