New York City’s beaches, offering 14 miles of scenic shoreline, will officially close for the season on Sunday, September 8, 2024. As the summer winds down, residents and visitors have just a few more days to enjoy the city’s iconic beaches, including popular spots like Coney Island, Rockaway Beach, and Brighton Beach.

During the beach season, lifeguards are on duty daily from 10:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m., ensuring the safety of swimmers. It’s important to note that swimming is only permitted when lifeguards are present. Swimming outside of these hours or in sections of the beach marked as closed, which are identified by red flags or signs, is strictly prohibited to ensure everyone’s safety.

Even after the swimming season ends, New Yorkers can still visit the beaches during the off-season. While swimming and wading in the water are not allowed, the beaches remain open for other activities like strolling, jogging, or simply enjoying the ocean view. The city’s beaches offer a year-round escape from the urban environment, providing a peaceful retreat even when swimming isn’t an option.

For those planning to visit the beach before the season ends, it’s advisable to stay informed about the latest beach conditions. You can sign up for real-time updates on water quality and beach closures by texting BEACH to 55676. Additionally, the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene provides information on beach status, including water quality advisories and closures, ensuring that beachgoers have the latest information before heading out.

NYC Parks also continues its commitment to public safety with initiatives like the free sunscreen program. With 56 dispensers available at all eight of the city’s beaches, visitors can easily protect their skin while enjoying the sun. This program, funded by the IMPACT Melanoma Foundation and Episcopal Health Services, ensures that everyone has access to SPF 30 sunscreen, along with valuable sun safety information provided at select locations.

As the 2024 beach season comes to a close, New Yorkers and visitors alike are encouraged to make the most of these final days and enjoy the city’s beautiful beaches while adhering to all safety guidelines.
