Chinatown, a densely populated historic neighborhood in Lower Manhattan, is served by New York City’s comprehensive water supply system, which has evolved from local wells and ponds to an extensive municipal network. In the 17th and 18th centuries, early settlers in the area, then part of the broader Lower Manhattan settlement, relied on private wells, springs, and ponds, including the prominent Collect Pond, which supplied much of the early city until its pollution rendered it unusable. Urban expansion, industrial activity, and contamination necessitated a transition to upland sources, with the completion of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842 providing a reliable, gravity-fed water supply that enabled the sustained development of neighborhoods like Chinatown.

Today, Chinatown receives water from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s integrated system, which draws exclusively from 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes in the protected Croton, Catskill, and Delaware watersheds. Water is conveyed primarily through the 105-mile Delaware Aqueduct to Hillview Reservoir and distributed throughout the city via more than 7,000 miles of pipelines. This gravity-powered system delivers approximately 1.3 billion gallons daily, supplemented by ultraviolet disinfection and extensive watershed protection measures. Current initiatives include ongoing pipeline replacements to minimize leaks, the use of corrosion inhibitors to reduce lead leaching, and a mandated replacement of approximately 241,000 lead service lines citywide by 2037, supported by the Department of Environmental Protection’s expanded free replacement program, in-home testing, and filter distribution.
