Yorktown, New York, established in 1788, has a rich history of water management evolving from private sources to a robust consolidated district. While early residents relied on local wells, the growing need for a reliable supply led to the development of a municipal system, highlighted by the grand opening of the original Water Department Pump House in 1932, as noted by the Town of Yorktown. Today, the Yorktown Consolidated Water District (YCWD) serves approximately 36,000 residents through about 10,000 service connections. Unlike systems relying on groundwater, Yorktown purchases 100% of its surface water from the New York City Water Supply System, drawing specifically from the Amawalk Reservoir in Somers and the Catskill Aqueduct to meet daily demands.

The district’s operations are bolstered by its membership in the Northern Westchester Joint Water Works (NWJWW), a regional collaboration that manages the treatment plants responsible for filtering and purifying the water. Recent infrastructure efforts include system improvements near Mohegan Avenue and Dale Street and regular maintenance programs like the 2025 hydrant flushing, according to Yorktown’s Water Department. The district is also navigating modern regulatory landscapes, recently addressing the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule requirements and issuing public notices regarding the preliminary determination to discontinue fluoridation, ensuring the community remains informed about changes to their water quality management.
