Water History of Greenwich Village, Manhattan New York

Greenwich Village, a historic neighborhood in Manhattan’s Lower West Side, is served by New York City’s comprehensive water supply system, which evolved from local wells and springs to a centralized municipal network. In the 17th and 18th centuries, settlers relied on private wells and natural sources such as Minetta Brook, as detailed by the New York City Department of Environmental Protection. As urbanization caused contamination and epidemics, including cholera outbreaks, the Croton Aqueduct was constructed in 1842, delivering unpolluted surface water from upstate reservoirs.

Today, the neighborhood receives water from the city’s system, managed by the Department of Environmental Protection, which supplies approximately 9 million people through more than 7,000 miles of pipes and tunnels. Water is sourced from protected Croton, Catskill, and Delaware watersheds, conveyed primarily through the Delaware Aqueduct and distributed via City Water Tunnel No. 1. The system delivers about 1.3 billion gallons daily, supported by watershed protections and ultraviolet disinfection.

Ongoing efforts include infrastructure rehabilitation, corrosion control to reduce lead leaching, and compliance with the EPA’s Lead and Copper Rule Improvements. A citywide service line inventory identified approximately 241,000 lead or unknown lines, including many in Greenwich Village’s older buildings, with full replacement required by 2037. The Department of Environmental Protection offers free replacements, water testing, and filter distribution.
