The Metropolitan Museum of Art, famously called the Met, is the largest museum in the United States. It is arguably the finest museum in the world and is home to history and art pieces from all corners of the earth, with some dating back over 5000 years.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art provides millions of visitors a chance to glimpse the history of different cultures that shape the world but also presents historical and modern art pieces to shed light on how humans have evolved over the centuries. The museum houses over 490,000 works of art and artifacts belonging to different regions of the world.

The Museum has become the center of attention in popular culture mainly because of the annual Met Gala held at the museum premises to celebrate the art of costumes. This high-profile, star-studded event has not only piqued general public interest in the museum and the art it presents. It has also helped generate additional financial support required to operate and maintain the multi-million dollar building.

History of the Met

The idea of an extensive collection of art pieces displayed for American audiences in New York was first proposed by an American lawyer, John Jay, in 1866. He was joined in this quest by various artists, art collectors, businessmen, civic leaders, and philanthropists. In April 1830, the Metropolitan Museum of Art opened its doors for the first time at 81 Fifth Avenue. The first objects acquired and displayed at the museum contained a Roman sarcophagus and over 170 European paintings, including ones created by Nicolas Poussin and Giovanni Battista Tiepolo.

The museum was relocated to its current location on 82nd Street and Fifth Avenue in 1880. The architecture of the new museum building on Fifth Avenue was designed in a Ruskinian Gothic style by Calvert Vaux and Jacob Wrey Mould. Since then, the building has undergone several additions and renovations. The original architecture is now surrounded by new structures. Some parts of the original architecture are still visible in the Robert Lehman Wing.

In December 1902, the famous Beaux-Arts Fifth Avenue front and the museum’s great hall, designed by Richard Morris Hunt, were opened to the public. These new additions were highly praised by visitors and local art enthusiasts. Many national and international newspapers also raved about these features, calling the museum building a masterpiece that approaches the grace and grandeur of the museums of the old world.

Attractions at the Museum

Over the years, the Met Museum has emerged as the greatest art center in the world. Given its enormity and the collection of artifacts on display, it is virtually impossible to view all the exhibits in one day. The museum’s website is a great resource to view and plan a visit accordingly. Here each artifact is cataloged along with the title, high-definition pictures, information about the artist, the date of creation, culture, medium, and dimensions. Additionally, the museum provides a detailed credit line for each collection.

The most outstanding art pieces currently on display at the Metropolitan Museum of Art include Van Goh’s Self Portrait with a Straw Hat, Emanuel Leutze’s Washington Crossing Delaware, Jacques Louis David’s The Death of Socrates, the whole room dedicated to Edgar Degas’s Little Dancer of Fourteen Years, Vermeer’s paintings, The Temple of Dendur, the Greek and Roman Sculpture Court, the Arms and Armour room, and the grim marble sculpture of Ugolino and His Sons.
