Brief History of Gantry Plaza State Park
Gantry Plaza State Park officially opened to the public on June 6, 1998, and later expanded upon in 2009. The park was developed on a former industrial site in the Long Island City neighborhood of Queens, New York City. It was created to revitalize the area and provide public access to the waterfront.
The park is currently being developed by the Queens West Development Corporation, with the original section designed by Thomas Balsley and Lee Weintraub, both celebrated New York landscape architects. The so-called stage 2 of the new six-acre park was designed by Abel Bainnson Butz, a leading architecture firm, with the first stage opening to the public in July 2009. However, when completed, Gantry Plaza State Park will be a sprawling 40 acres park.
Gantry Plaza State Park has become a popular destination for tourists and local residents and offers a variety of amenities, including walkways, playgrounds, and public art installations. Gantry Plaza State Park events feature concerts, movies, and fitness classes, adding to the lively atmosphere of the place.
