Gramercy Park, a historic and exclusive neighborhood in Manhattan, New York, is supplied by the New York City water distribution system, which has transitioned from localized groundwater sources to a modern, extensive municipal network. In the early colonial period, residents of the area, originally marshlands surrounding a freshwater pond known as Gramercy Water, depended on private wells and natural springs for their water needs. As urban development intensified during the 19th century, pollution of these local sources necessitated a shift to a more reliable supply. The completion of the Croton Aqueduct in 1842 introduced clean, gravity-fed water from upstate reservoirs, enabling the transformation of Gramercy Park into a prominent residential enclave.

Today, Gramercy Park receives its water from the New York City Department of Environmental Protection’s comprehensive supply system, drawing exclusively from 19 reservoirs and three controlled lakes within the protected Croton, Catskill, and Delaware watersheds. Water is transported primarily through the 105-mile Delaware Aqueduct to Hillview Reservoir and delivered via an extensive network of over 7,000 miles of pipelines. This gravity-powered system provides approximately 1.3 billion gallons of water daily to the city, supplemented by ultraviolet disinfection and rigorous watershed protection measures.

Current water management efforts in Gramercy Park include ongoing infrastructure improvements, such as pipeline replacements to reduce leaks and the application of corrosion inhibitors to minimize lead leaching from older service lines. The city is also addressing the replacement of approximately 241,000 lead and unknown service lines system-wide by 2037, supported by the Department of Environmental Protection’s expanded free replacement program, alongside in-home water testing and filter distribution. These initiatives ensure a safe and reliable water supply for Gramercy Park’s historic properties and residents.
