What Are Other School's Saying
Ensure the Safety of Your School or Day Care's Drinking Water
New York and New Jersey states requires all Boards of Cooperative Educational Services (BOCES) and public-school districts to test their drinking water for lead, including public, private and day care facilities. The state passed the law in 2016. And updated in 2021, again in 2022. All private school districts need to test water at all points of use for drinking and cooking every 5 years. Public; 3 years.
New York and New Jersey agencies have now placed a 15 micrograms of lead per liter (ug/l) (ppb) limit on private school drinking water and 5 ug/l for public schools under BOCES 2023. If any samples we collect exceed this action level, schools will have to:
- Prohibit students from using the water to drink or cook
- Communicate the findings
- Develop a remediation plan
- Ensure staff and students have adequate water
- Retest and pass before they can be returned to service
While water in New York, New Jersey and the surrounding areas are safe, it’s possible that lead can seep into the water from fittings, faucets, and fixtures traveling along the way to and quite often within the building.

FAQs
Water Testing
It is typically the responsibility of schools to notify parents and staff about the results of water testing. There are a few different ways that schools might do this, depending on the specific requirements in their state and the results of the tests.
One way that schools might notify parents and staff about the results of water testing is by sending a letter or email. This letter might include information about the results of the tests, any actions that the school is taking to address any issues that were identified, and any recommendations for students and staff (such as using bottled water until the issue is resolved).
Another way that schools might notify parents and staff about the results of water testing is by posting the results on their website or in a public area of the school, such as the main office or the library. This can allow parents and staff to easily access the information and stay informed about the quality of the water at the school.
It is important for schools to be transparent about the results of water testing and to keep parents and staff informed about any issues that may affect the safety of the drinking water. This can help to ensure that everyone is aware of any potential risks and can take steps to protect their health.
If contaminants are found in the water at a school, the school is required to take steps to address the issue and ensure that the water meets safety standards. The specific steps that a school must take will depend on the type and level of contaminants that were found and the regulations in the state where the school is located.
In general, if contaminants are found in the water at a school, the school may need to do one or more of the following:
- Provide bottled water: If the levels of contaminants in the water are high enough to pose a risk to students and staff, the school may need to provide bottled water for drinking and cooking until the issue is resolved.
- Install filtration systems: In some cases, the school may be able to address the issue by installing filtration systems that remove contaminants from the water. These systems may include filters, reverse osmosis systems, or other technologies.
- Repair or replace pipes: If the issue is caused by damaged or corroded pipes, the school may need to repair or replace these pipes to fix the problem.
- Conduct additional testing: The school may need to conduct additional testing to confirm the results of the initial tests and determine the extent of the contamination. This can help to inform the school’s response and ensure that the appropriate steps are taken to address the issue.
- Notify parents and staff: It is important for the school to notify parents and staff about the results of the water testing and any actions that are being taken to address the issue. This can help to ensure that everyone is aware of the situation and any potential risks.
Overall, the goal of these steps is to ensure that the water at the school is safe for students and staff to consume and that any issues are promptly addressed.
