Conception
The idea for a joint port authority for the two neighboring states was presented in 1917 by the advisory board of the Harbor Development Commission. This bi-state entity was the best course of action to ensure the economic development of the port district between the two states. Therefore, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was established in April 1921.
The main reason behind the conception of such an administrative body was to reduce political influence and corruption in the city’s infrastructure development and improve the efficiency of the government. The Port Authority completed many long-term infrastructure projects unimpeded by political turbulence. The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey was renamed in 1972 to more accurately represent its status as a joint venture between the two states.
