Heavy Metals in Drinking Water

heading-bg

Common potable drinking water contaminants

The following heavy metals and chemicals are just a very few of the most common culprits of poor water quality throughout NYC and the surrounding boroughs. You may be interested in testing for some or all of these if being fully comprehensive is deemed necessary or desirable. Learn More

Lead

Lead, a toxic metal, can infiltrate water systems via corroding pipes. Prolonged exposure is linked to health issues like developmental delays in children, kidney dysfunction, and cardiovascular effects. Mitigation includes using filters rated for lead removal and replacing lead-containing plumbing components. Regular water testing for lead is recommended . All private and public schools pre K – grade 12 and daycare facilities are now required to test their potable drinking water for lead every 3 years.

Learn More

Copper

Copper contamination often occurs from copper pipes. While essential for health in small amounts, excessive copper causes gastrointestinal distress, liver or kidney damage, and adverse neurological effects. To reduce exposure, run water until cold before use, and consider anti-corrosion treatments or polyethylene-lined copper pipes.

Learn More

Iron

Iron in water, typically from natural geological sources or corroding iron-containing fixtures, poses minimal health risks but can cause disagreeable metallic taste, staining on laundry and fixtures, and plumbing issues due to its corrosive nature. Solutions include sediment filters, water softeners, or oxidation filtration to tackle different iron forms.

Chemicals in Drinking Water

heading-bg-purple

VOCs encompass various chemicals used in industrial and consumer products, potentially leading to liver, kidney, and central nervous system damage, and some are carcinogenic. They enter water supplies through industrial discharge or product usage. Activated carbon filters or aeration treatment systems help in reducing VOC concentrations.

PFAs, human-made chemicals, are found in products like non-stick cookware and are linked to adverse health effects, including reproductive issues, liver damage, and increased cancer risk. They’re persistent in the environment and the human body. Activated carbon filters or reverse osmosis systems can reduce PFA levels in water.

Microplastics are tiny plastic particles less than 5mm in size, often originating from larger plastic debris breaking down or from products like cosmetics and synthetic clothing. These particles can be ingested by marine life, leading to accumulation in the food chain and potentially affecting human health. Microplastics are pervasive in the environment, including oceans, soil, and drinking water. Reducing exposure involves minimizing plastic use, opting for natural fibers, and using advanced water filtration systems, such as reverse osmosis or nanofiltration, to remove them from drinking water.
