The history of aluminum in drinking water
For more than 100 years, aluminium has been used to treat drinking water, with milestones and scandals along the way. In this article, we will see what the history of aluminium in water, when and how it was first used and major moments and scandals related to its use.
Aluminium treatment is applied to drinking water from the beginning of the 20th century to remove particles, bacteria and algae [1]. Aluminium sulfate (alum) was one of the earliest chemical products to do this, and water would be added to coagulate and settle out dirt so that the water would be clear and drinkable [2].
The first tally for aluminum use in water treatment was its inclusion in 1911 in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Drinking Water Standards [3]. This was the first formal approval of aluminium as a water treatment.
The drinking water treatment of aluminum grew to involve aluminum salts (aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum polyphosphate) as coagulants to remove impurities during the mid-20th century [4]. These chemicals were more powerful and effective than alum, and they quickly overtook alum as the primary coagulant in drinking water treatment.
But health issues about aluminum in drinking water have surfaced in the decades since, and are now among the great controversy over its use. Research has suggested that long-term exposure to high levels of aluminium in drinking water may lead to all kinds of diseases, such as Alzheimer’s disease and kidney problems [5].
And yet, for all these reasons, aluminum is still used in drinking water treatment today. The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has set limits on the amount of aluminum that can be used in drinking water, and these are periodically checked to ensure that they’re not exceeded.
In the past few years, it has been found that there are technologies that can be used to purify water without aluminum coagulants. Reverse osmosis, ion exchange and other such technologies are gaining in use as a way to deliver clean water without the health risks of aluminium.
Aluminium has been treated water for 100 years now. It was used as a coagulant at the turn of the 20th century, when it was added to water as an ingredient called aluminium sulfate to dissolve impurities. The inclusion of aluminium in the United States Public Health Service (USPHS) Drinking Water Standards in 1911 was its first official inscription. Midcentury, aluminum salts like aluminum chlorohydrate and aluminum polyphosphate were coagulants that gradually replaced alum as the coagulant of choice for drinking water treatment. But there have been decades of worries about the health effects of aluminium in water. These fears are not unfounded, however the aluminum in drinking water treatment is still used today, only monitored and treated using new technologies to take the aluminium out of the water.

The sources of aluminum in drinking water
Aluminum is a mineral that occurs naturally, so it is present in the environment and in water. But there are several routes that aluminium can find its way into drinking water, and these routes should be well-understood to avoid or at least mitigate risks to health. In this article, we will look at how various aluminums can get into drinking water, like when pipes are corroded or you’re using aluminium water treatment chemicals.
Aluminum corrosion from aluminum pipes and fittings is the biggest culprit for aluminum in drinking water. Metal pipes and fittings that used to be common were corroded by many variables including pH, hardness of water, and other mineral concentrations [1]. Because the pipes become corroded, aluminum can get in the water supply and can be high levels [2].
There is also aluminum in the water by way of aluminium water treatment chemicals — aluminum sulfate, aluminum chloride, and aluminum chlorohydrate [3]. These chemicals are used as coagulants to get suspended particles, bacteria and algae out of drinking water [4]. Although these chemicals can be very effective in flushing out contaminants, they can leave the treated water with high levels of aluminium.
Beyond these sources, aluminium can also get into the water supply from natural sources – as in the soil and rocks, for example, because of aluminium-rich minerals in the ground. For example, we can detect aluminium in water that has come into contact with certain rocks (eg granite) or in soils that are mineral rich in aluminium [5].
The aluminum in drinking water coming from these wells is usually very low and shouldn’t really harm the health, but it does have an impact in a handful of extreme cases where it can get high. Water suppliers and consumers should be testing the drinking water for aluminum if their water supply is deemed high in aluminum. There’s also a water filter that can filter out aluminum, which is something you can add on for a bit of extra protection if you have concerns about aluminum in your water.
Al is an element found in nature and is in the environment – even in water. Yet there are other routes of aluminum into the water supply: for example, aluminum pipes and fixtures corrode, or you might use aluminum water treatment chemicals. These are sources of aluminum in drinking water, and although it doesn’t usually cause health issues, when it does, in the rare instances where there is a high concentration it can be detrimental. The water companies and consumers should check their water for aluminum, and install a water filter system if it is very high.

The potential health effects of aluminum in drinking water
Aluminum is an element that is found naturally in the environment (and even in water). The aluminum concentrations in water are low, but long-term exposure to high amounts of aluminium is feared to cause a range of ailments. We will discuss in this article whether or not drinking water contains aluminum that can have health implications for us like neurological, kidney and bone health effects.
This is one of the biggest concerns for drinking water containing aluminum: neurological health. One study suggested that exposure to aluminum for an extended period of time could lead to neurological diseases like Alzheimer’s [1]. The proof of the connection between aluminium and Alzheimer’s disease is sketchy, but the evidence is being built and further research is needed to make the link solid.
Another potential health risk of aluminium in water is kidney disease. It has been found that exposure to aluminum in the long-term can lead to kidney problems, like kidney stones [2]. The presence of a lot of aluminium in the water can also cause bone breakage in kidney patients [3].
Along with neurological and kidney damage, the aluminum found in drinking water could have effects on bone. Some researchers have proposed that exposure to aluminum for long periods of time can lead to osteoporosis, a disease of brittle and weak bones [4]. Perhaps because aluminium has the tendency to disrupt the metabolistion of calcium and other bone-nourishing minerals.
The thing is, most of the studies done were in animals, and it’s not quite as clear that the same can happen with people, and there is still more research needed on the health impacts of aluminum in water. What’s more, although some researchers have linked aluminum in water to these ailments, other factors including genetics, lifestyle and health might contribute to these conditions as well.
Not only that, but aluminium levels in drinking water considered safe by regulators like the US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the World Health Organization (WHO) are a long way below harmful levels in the lab, and there is no reason to believe that exposure to aluminium at standard drinking water levels could cause any of the above-mentioned health problems. Adding to that, there is aluminium in all food and drugs, and the total daily intake of everything (over and above drinking water alone) is more important than the total daily intake.

The regulation of aluminum in drinking water
The aluminium is a naturally occurring element that is in the environment such as in drinking water. Drinking water levels are relatively low, but elevated levels of aluminum could be linked to various health conditions if you are exposed to them long-term. For the sake of public safety, regulations were implemented to regulate the levels of aluminium in tap water. We will explore in this post some of the regulatory schemes that exist for regulating the level of aluminum in the water, as well as any regulations or limit set by the national and international bodies.
The US Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) makes regulations on levels of aluminum in water through the Safe Drinking Water Act. The EPA has established an action level for drinking water aluminum at 0.05-0.2 mg/L as the point (or upper limit) below which water districts must intervene to decrease the level of aluminum in their water [1]. Furthermore, according to the EPA, aluminium concentrations in water supply should be as low as possible [2].
And, just like the World Health Organization (WHO), they also set limits on the levels of aluminium in tap water. The WHO uses a maximum limit of 0.2 mg/L for aluminum in water as the minimum level above which there are no adverse health effects [3].
Not to be forgotten: the amounts of aluminum that these regulatory bodies regard as safe are well below what has been found to be harmful in the lab. And there is aluminum in a lot of foods and medicine as well, and the total daily intake from all sources is considered more important than only drinking water intake.
Besides these recommendations, there are often regulations and standards of aluminum levels in the water that some countries have. In Canada, for instance, Health Canada set the limit for aluminum at 0.1 mg/L in drinking water [4]. And also the European Union (EU) has set a limit of 0.2 mg/L for aluminum in water [5].
Regulations were implemented to limit the amount of aluminum found in tap water to ensure health. In the US, the EPA has enforced minimum levels of aluminium in water (by the Safe Drinking Water Act) while the World Health Organization (WHO) has regulations on aluminum in water. Most other countries have regulations and guidelines for levels of aluminium in water as well. These are recommended levels, which are far below levels in the lab proven to be toxic. Also that aluminum is in a great number of foods and drugs, and that the daily total intake from all sources is much more important than the intake from drinking water.

The effectiveness of water treatment methods for removing aluminum

While chemical treatment methods can be effective in reducing the levels of aluminum in drinking water, they may also have some limitations such as pH adjustment can cause corrosion in pipes, chelating agents might produce waste and require specialized handling.
Also, ion exchange resins can be used for removing aluminum from drinking water by adsorbing the aluminum ions from the water [5]. This method can effectively remove aluminum from water, but the ion exchange resin must be periodically replaced, and the process generates a waste stream which requires appropriate disposal.
In addition to these traditional methods, there are also some newer technologies that have been developed to remove aluminum from drinking water. One example is the use of nanofiltration (NF) and reverse osmosis (RO) membranes, which can effectively remove aluminum from water by rejecting it along with other dissolved solids [6]. However, this method can be costly and energy-intensive, it also produces waste water that requires treatment.
Various methods have been developed to remove aluminum from drinking water, including filtration, chemical treatment, and newer technologies such as membrane filtration. While these methods can be effective in reducing the levels of aluminum in drinking water, they also have their own limitations such as cost, energy consumption, maintenance and waste generation.
